The DNA Test

Once you return your sample kit to FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA), it is sent to the University of Arizona. The molecular genetics labs there do the actual storing of the sample and the testing of it.

The test consists of an elaborate process of many steps, using machines that have been specially developed for molecular biology. A tremendous amount of work goes into careful tracking of the sample and into repeatable results from it. The goal of the process (which I will not attempt to describe in detail, although I have witnessed it) is to determine your YDNA signature.

The "result" of the test is your YDNA signature (see details at What is a YDNA signature?), a list of numbers.
