"To my Smith Cousins,

Last night at 3:00 a.m. when I couldn't sleep because I knew I had more information on Jesse R. Smith. I went crazy tearing through my packed boxes. I was looking for a letter that my uncle Benjamin Billups wrote to me in 1969. I found it. He had been doing research on Jesse Smith for 8 years. Jesse was his great grandfather. He died in 1978 and I know that he had quite a lot of information. I am sad to say it is lost to me but this might help you in our search. I am going to copy this to you word for word. Here Goes!

Jesse Richard Smith was born in 1820 in Alabama, of parents, both of whom were born in North Carolina. Family legend says he was in Texas prior to the War of Independence; that he was the oldest boy in the wagon trains fleeing across the Trinity ahead of the Mexican Army under Santa Ana; that he was later a bridge guard.

Jesse R. Smith served from May 18, 1846, to Oct. 2, 1846 in Capt. Herbert's Co., 1st Regiment, Texas Mounted Rifles (Hay's Texas Rangers) in the Mexican War, mustering out at Monterey, Mexico. On 15 Feb. 1849, he married Elizabeth M. Harrison at Brenham, Washington Co., Texas. Family legend says he was an Indian fighter, either as a member of the Texas Rangers or one of the frontier units which existed in Texas. He was wounded, (the maner is not clear) in the hip in one such encounter, crippled, and walked with a cane the last years of his life.

He was living in Atascosa Co. in 1860, lived some portion of his life in San Aba Co., and in 1880 was living in Runnels Co., a rancher. In 1884, when his wife died, he was in Abilene, Texas. About 1890 he with his sons and their families, moved to New Mexico, settling in the Cloudcroft area of Otero Co., New Mexico. He died in 1905.

Children of Jesse R. Smith and Elizabeth Mary Harrison were:

1. Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) born 1 Jan. 1850 probuably Washington Co., married Frank Goodsell.
2. William L., born 27 Nov. 1852. Disappeared after an encounter with James Wesley Hardin, about 1880.
3. Samuel O., born 11 Apr. 1856. Died Douglas, AZ.
4. Cordelia Josephine, born 12 May 1858, married Phineas Watkins Hudman.
5. Sophrona Parilee, born 23 Mar. 1860, at Pleasantown, Atascosa Co., Texas, married Benjamin Monroe Hudman, on 8 April 1888 at Lookout, Lincoln Co., New Mexico. Died, Pasadena, Ca. 1935.

      1. Ernest - died in infancy.
      2. Jesse Earl Hudman - married Elizabeth Scott, died 1964.
      3. Emmett Eddy Hudman, died Pasadena, Ca., 1936, married Ophelia Maples.
      4. Minnie Lois Hudman - born 26 May 1894 at Cloudcroft, N.M. (Otero Co.) married Edward Young Billups at Alamogordo, Otero Co., N.M. She died 31 May 1972. Edward Y. Billups born 18 Nov. 1874 and died 4 Apr. 1950. They later lived at 1018 Hawaii Ave. Alamogordo, N.M. (This is my grandparents.)
      5. Ollie Josephine Hudman, married Robert Zenker. Living 1969, Mt. Shasta, Oregon.
      6. Mary Ethal Hudman- born 24 Oct. 1897, married Oscar F. Burns, living 1969, in Phoenix, AZ.
      7. Benjamin Vernon Hudman- married Ruby Scott, died 1961.
      8. Frederick Vaughn Hudman married Mary Lou Allen. Living 1969, in Laytonville, Ca.

6. Elijah F. Smith was born 24 Mar. 1862.
7. Benjamin Benton Smith, born 22 Sept. 1867 in Texas, married a daughter of Jim Gilliland, one of the principals of the Lincoln Co. War in New Mexico, settled near Cliff, N.M. rancher. Children: Ray, died Las Cruces, N.M., in 1964; Benjamin B., living 1966 in Globe, AZ.
8. Jesse R. Smith, born 11 Sept. 1867, twin of Benjamin B.
9. Two brothers James and John, died or disappeared before the current record (at this point I have lost the rest of the page.)

This is mostly new information, and a wealth of it. There is a bug or two, however: Jim Gililland was the brother of BEN SMITH's wife, dau of WILLIAM FRANKLIN GILILLAND. RAY SMITH died in 1964 but not in Las Cruces, NM; he died in Delta, CO.

A followup posting on 6 Jul 2001, also by Sherry Thompson, adds these details (from another letter form her uncle):

"Jesse R. Smith
Born in Alabama, on the same day, same year as Benjamin Turner Hudman
...
Family legion says that he was a Texan prior to the War of Independance, that he was the oldest boy in the wagon train leaving San Antonio before the battle of the Alamo in Feb., 1836.

From his pension record it is ascertained that he was enrolled in the 1st Regiment, Tx. Mounted Rifles on 18 May 1846 at Point Isabel, Texas on 7 June took part in the fighting around Monterey, Mexico and was mustered out 10 Oct. 1846 at Monterey.

He was an Indian fighter and Johnny Ben Hudman says it was by getting dragged by a horse during an Indian fight, another Minnie Lois Hudman says that he was wounded by an arrow in an Indian fight, resulting in a broken hip.

He was believed to be living in San Saba County in 1860 when Sophronia P. was born. A few years later, they evidently moved to the vicinity of San Antonio, then to Abilene, where they were living about 1875. He was in Runnels County on 2 June, 1880 at the time of the census. He was living at Content, Runnels Co., on F3b. 17, 1887 when he filed an application for a pension on basis of this Mexican War Service. He was living in Cloudcroft, N.M. on 1 Dec. 1902. The last record of him, the cancellation of his Pension on Feb. 4, 1906, which state that his pension was last paid on 4 Nov. 1902, and the claim was dropped because of failure to claim the money. Pension Certificate was #3,337.

Death:
He died near Cloudcroft and is buried in Cox Canyon, in a small community graveyard on the Talley or Bonnell ranch property. This cemetery is opposite the old Sawmill site."

"I did not know that Polk was in Elizabeth's name. I thought her maiden name was Harrison. I assumed this because of the marriage record of Jessie R. and Elizabeth Harrison in Washington County, Texas. Also, there is a James Harrison in their home in the 1860 Census that I thought may be her brother. Also, an E. B. Harrison family is in the next dwelling in the 1860 Census, and a couple other reasons I thought her name was Harrison. Sophronia's family show her maiden name as Harrison. There is so much we do not know. I have never looked for records in Waco. I can see where Jesse R. bought 320 acres for $320 in 1862 in Atascosa County then sold it to E. B. Harrison in 1866 for $320, same legal description. He bought three lots in Pleasanton in 1866 for $200, sold two of them in 1868 for $160. In 1870 they (J. R. and Elizabeth M.) sold stock (cattle) for $3,000. There is a Benjamin and Catherine Smith family in Washington County that I feel might be Jesse's parents, but no proof."

The only one of these that is definitely ours is the last one. Not only is it for Jesse R (but it has Jesse K written above it), but Herbert's Co, 1st Texas Mounted Volunteers matches his pension file information as relayed in Benjamin Billups letters (see above). One thing is clear: his rank was Private.

NARA Seattle had the Mexican War Pension Index, but not the pensions themselves. Here is the index entry for JESSE, on microfilm series T317, roll 11, Roby, Thomas-Smith, John:

His dau Mary E Goodsell, in 1880 TX Census, is listed as having her father from MS, her mother from AL (qv)..^13,14,15,4 He moved on 2 March 1836 at Texas, USA. Jesse was granted a "second class headright" to 640 acres for those who became citizens of the Republic of Texas during its first year and a half - that is, between founding day 2 Mar 1836 and 1 Oct 1837. The headright was granted by the Land Commissioners of Montgomery Co but the land Jesse chose was in Henderson Co..¹⁶ He bought property at Henderson, Texas, USA, on 7 December 1841. Actually not a deed but a headright to land granted to him conditionally on 2 Aug 1838 and unconditionally on 7 Dec 1841 with land surveyed Oct 1840..¹⁶ JESSE served in the military at Texas, USA, on 18 May 1846.¹⁷ He sold property at 640 acres, Henderson Co., TX, Huntsville, Walker, Texas, USA, on 29 August 1848. Land is in Henderson Co, TX, but Jesse signs the deed in Walker Co, TX and the deed is attested the same day in Huntsville, Walker Co, TX. It says Jesse is "of Washington County"..¹⁶ He resided at Washington, Texas, USA, on 29 August 1848. See deed of this date, which states his residence is Washington Co..¹⁶ He married ELIZABETH MARY HARRISON at Brenham, Washington, Texas, USA, on 15 February 1849.^18,19,20,21 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1860 Census at Atascosa, Texas, USA.⁴ JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1870 Census at Pleasanton, Atascosa, Texas, USA.^22,3 JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1880 Census at Tom Green, Texas, USA.⁶ JESSE was listed as the head of a family on the on 1 June 1880 Census at Runnels, Texas, USA.⁵ JESSE applied for a military pension on 1 March 1887. "From the records of: Lucy Grace Smith and Freeda Costner [address]. Jim and Imag Jean were married 1 Apr 1924.

Ima Jean is sister to Jessie Johnson who is the wife of Dick Raley. Jim is brother to Alvy Ray Smith, son of Lucretia Gililland and Ben Smith. So these sisters married cousins. Dick is son of Lucy Gililland and Bob Raley." Ima was born at New Mexico, USA, circa 1894.² She married James William Smith on 1 April 1924.³

     John was born at New Mexico, USA, circa 1895.¹ He married Rose May "Rosy" Smith on 31 October 1915. Webb gives Jul 1920; Snyder 31 Oct 1915 (divorced).^2,3

     William Allen A Mormon genealogical record says his name is ``U.S. citizen name/Swedish name''. William was born at Brevik, Skaraborgs, Sweden, on 27 May 1882.¹ He married Rose May "Rosy" Smith on 15 June 1945.² William died on 15 October 1958 at Everett, Snohomish, Washington, USA, at age 76.¹

     Irva was born at Stockton, San Joaquin, California, USA, on 3 February 1899. She married George Richard Smith in July 1920.^1,2,3 Irva died on 21 November 1994 at Redlands, San Bernardino, California, USA, at age 95.

     She married Albert Leter (Lesser) Smith circa 1925.^1,2

     Frank was born at New Mexico, USA, circa 1875. Snyder has his name William Schlindler.¹ He married LUCRETIA ANN "Crishy" GILILLAND at Artesia, Eddy, New Mexico, USA, on 12 March 1911.^2,3

     Harlin (Harland) Walker Name spelled by some sources as Harland. Harlin was born at New Mexico, USA, circa 10 November 1875.¹ He married LUCRETIA ANN "Crishy" GILILLAND at Arizona, USA, after 23 December 1915. IGI gives 1915, but her mother ROSETTA's obit, dated 23 Dec 1915, lists her as Mrs Shindler.

Snyder: "Abt 1917".^2,3,1 Harlin died on 27 January 1922 at Clifton, Greenlee, Arizona, USA.¹

     Thomas was born at New Mexico, USA, circa 1875.¹ He married LUCRETIA ANN "Crishy" GILILLAND at Greenlee, Clifton, Greenlee, Arizona, USA, on 27 July 1926.^2,3

     James Allen Gililland Is a twin with his sister Mary Agnes. Source: Genealogical record prepared for submission to the Mormon archives by Maurine Webb, 401 Oasis, Chaparral, New Mexico 88021 in 1981. She in turn credits as sources US Census Records, Vital Statistics, and a book ``A History of Audrian County, Missouri 1884'', p. 602. All of the information for James and his siblings comes from this same source.

Webb 1993:

"James Allen is a twin, he married an identical twin. Expectedly, twins occur regularly in this refined family of professional people."

"James Allen married (2) Eliza Virginia Pearson 15 Mar 1906. She was born 1865, died 1966. No issue."

He married Lucinda Rebecca Self at Ralls, MO, on 24 September 1863.^4,5 He married Eliza Virginia Pearson on 15 March 1906.¹ James died on 10 November 1910 at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, at age 70.^6,7,8 His body was interred at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, at Laddonia Cemetery.¹

But Pamela Butler has her married to a Mr Burch. Mary was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 4 February 1840.⁴ She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW. As of 11 August 1858,her married name was Gatewood.^5,6,7 She married Robert Hay Taliaferro Gatewood at Pike, Illinois, USA, on 11 August 1858.^5,6,7 Mary died on 18 November 1904 at Vandalia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, at age 64.⁸

     Edward was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, circa 1842.^1,2,3 He was the son of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

     Elizabeth was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 16 March 1843.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW. As of after 20 May 1870,her married name was Gilmore.^4,5 She married Judge John Thomas Gilmore at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, after 20 May 1870.^4,5 Elizabeth A. Gililland died on 16 March 1873 at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, at age 30.³ She was buried after 16 March 1873 at Sulphur Lick Cemetery, Lincoln, Missouri, USA.⁶

     Margaret was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, circa 1844.^1,2 She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

     Benjamin was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, circa 1846.^1,2,3 He was the son of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

     Jesse Richardson Gililland There is a Jesse Gililland 60 and a Mary Gililland 58 in Pocatello, Bannock Co ID census index, 1910. However Jesse is b KY. Family Tree Maker Online: GenealogyLibrary.com: Bannock County, Idaho Census Index, 1910. Jesse was born at Pike, Illinois, USA, circa 1848. Nielson: 1849, Pike Co, MO. 1850 Census puts him at 2 in Pike Co, IL so this is a good guess as to his birthplace..^2,3,4 He was the son of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

     Catherine N Gililland There is a marriage record for Catherine Gilliland to George H Birch, 25 Dec 1870, Audrain Co, MO, which might be this Catherine. Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, "Marriage Records of Audrain County, Missouri 1836-79 (Chillicothe, Missouri: Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry, c 1965); also online at Ancestry.com. But see Nancy Catheryne Gililland m George N Burch. Catherine was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, circa 1851.¹ She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

She married George N Burch on 25 December 1870.⁶

     Sarah O Gililland is the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and ANN "Annie" SHAW.

     Eliza was born at Pike, Missouri, USA, on 5 March 1831. 5 Mar 1834 in Maureen Webb's book, but Mar 1831 in 1900 Census, so I will change her 1834 to 1831..^1,2 She married JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, on 10 May 1868.^3,2 Eliza was listed as a member of a church at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, on 3 December 1878.⁴ Eliza died on 6 August 1913 at age 82.¹

     Annie B Gililland Webb 1993: RIN 557: "Annie lived only 3 or 4 years".

On the other hand, from Pamela Butler's evidence:

"Annie B. Gililland (Source: Information on Annie seems confused, she is said to have died at age 5 in 1872, which either makes her daughter of Ann Shaw or wrong birthdate for her.), b. Abt. 1870, Laddonia, Audrain County, Missouri; m. Fred Swanson, 1886, laddonia, Audrain County, Missouri."

Problem here. Annie was born at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, circa 1869.^3,4 She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and Eliza Ann Ferrell. Annie died circa 1872 at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA.^3,4

     Ada J Gililland Webb 1993: "The only surviving child of Jesse's second marriage. Byrde Mc Coy Mc Camen is a grandaughter of this family and gave me this data." Ada was born at Laddonia, Audrain, Missouri, USA, on 14 September 1871.² She was the daughter of JESSE RICHARDSON GILILLAND and Eliza Ann Ferrell. She married Lewis W McCoy on 11 September 1894.³ Ada died on 7 December 1949 at age 78.²

     He married Ada J Gililland on 11 September 1894.¹

     JAMES SHAW His middle name given variously by some sources as JOSEPH or S, and his nickname as "Jimmy".

He is listed in the 1860 TX Burleson Co. slave schedule with four slaves: one black male 36, one black female 36, one mulatto female 25, and one black male 12, one slave house.

The 1840 Lincoln Co MO Census has:

"James Shaw Sr _ _ 2 _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1"

which means 2M 10-15, 1M 50-60, 1F 50-60". In 1840, JAMES would have been, by our other data, 59, MARY, 55, consistent with the 1840 census. However, the 2 young boys are a puzzle. Note that his son James Jr would have already been in TX in 1840. I have surmized that he had a first wife. Perhaps these were a couple of her children that he left with the grandparents?

The 1830 Lincoln Co MO Census has:

which means 1M0-5, 1M5-10, 3M15-20, 1M20-30, 1M40-50, 2F5-10, 1F10-15, 1F30-40. By our other data, JAMES would be, in 1830, 49 and MARY would be 45. James Jr would be abt 22, Bethuel 20, John 17, Robert 17, Nancy 15, ANN 12, Adeline 10, Napoleon 7, Joseph 4: 1M0-5, 1M5-10, 2M15-20, 2M20-30, 1M40-50, 2F10-15, 1F15-20, 1F40-50, or 1 1 _ 2 2 _ 1 _ _ _ _ 2 1 _ _ 1 _ . This would be right if all the F were shifted one column left and if Bethuel 20 were counted in the 15-20 column.

NB Lee Co was formed in 1874 from parts of Burleson, Bastrop, and two other counties. Evergreen Cemetery, Lt James Shaw is buried, is located now in Lee Co. So references to Bastrop and Burleson wrt the Shaw family probably refer to what is now known as Lee Co.

He married MARY "Polly" RIGGS at Kentucky, USA, circa 1807.^12,4,5,13 He resided at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, in 1821, Union Township.¹⁴ JAMES was listed as the head of a family on the in 1830 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.¹⁵ JAMES was listed as the head of a family on the in 1840 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.⁷ JAMES was listed as the head of a family on the in 1850 Census at Burleson, Texas, USA.¹⁶ JAMES was listed as a household member living with Hon, Lt James S Shaw on the 1870 Census at Burleson, Texas, USA.⁶ JAMES was listed as the head of a family on the in 1860 Census at Burleson, Texas, USA.¹⁷ JAMES died in 1866 at Burleson, Texas, USA. My grandmother had a sister, named Polly, and a brother who went to Missouri in the early days along with her family. Her Sister married to a man by the name of Jimmie. They were grand-parents of the Shaw family who came to Grayson County, Texas, in the early fifties. Susan Shaw, her husband and her family, consisted of Bud, Bony, and Nib, all of whom are now dead; and Delia, who married Dick Vivian; Margaret, who Married L. M. Spearman, an Uncle of mine; and Sarah, who married Jim Francis. They are all now dead, but have left children who are citizens of this county.

Uncle Jimmie Shaw and Aunt Polly had among their family twin boys, Bob and John Shaw, who came to Texas at an early day and settled in or near Bistro (Bastrop) Country [sic]. Note that we believe that Annie Shaw married our Jesse Gililland so there is a problem here.      JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND RICHARDSON is his mother's surname.

John married Elizabeth at the request of Agnes. John may have been born in Kentucky. His will was read in 1853. He was supposed to have two brothers. One named Tice (Eustice? Mathias?) and Robert. The 1830 Missouri Census lists, in Lincoln County, John Gilliland, Robert Gilliland, Mathias Gilliland (note spelling of last names here).

The Gililland tombstone evidence:

The tombstone calculator gives 17 Dec 1792 as birthdate from this evidence. Other evidence gives the date as 17 Jan 1793 and the death date as 6 Sep 1851. Added in proof: My reading of the color photo of the tombstone is "aged 59 Ys 11 Ds" which gives, from the tombstone calculator a birthdate of 17 Jan 1793.

The Living Irish evidence, quoting the 1850 Lincoln Co, MO Census gives the following conflicting evidence:

"John, 47, (b. 1803) farmer, b. N.C; Elizabeth, 49, b. N.C; Elizabeth, 17, b. Mo. as were the rest in this household; Sarah, 14; James, 11; Cynthia, 9; Louis, 7; Alexander, 5; and Levi, 4. Taken Oct. 26, 1850"

How could John be 47 in 1850 Census and 59 two years later when he died? But if I write up the 1850 Census from the other evidence it would read like this:

"John, 57, (b 1793) b SC or PA; Elizabeth, 43, b MO; Elizabeth, 23, b MO as were the rest in this household; Sarah, 14; James, 12; Sinthy (Cynthia), 10; Louis, 7; and Levi, 4. Taken Oct 26, 1850"

Lots of differences here but every child in the pseudo listing is a child in the 1850 Census listing. The older children Mary Ann, 24; David, 22; Nancy, 20; and Andrew J, 19 are missing, except for Elizabeth where the ages don't match. They have probably left home, except of course for Elizabeth. One younger child Alexander, 5 in the 1850 Census list we do not have from the other evidence at all. But all the younger children listed have the same names and ages in both lists, to within the accuracy of census dates. Finally, the husband and wife have the right names, but wrong ages and birthplaces. Nevertheless, this is too close to discount. I tentatively deduce the existence of Alexander from it.

The Robert P Gililland Tree:

"John and a friend named William Trail settled and built a log cabin near Sulfur Lick Spring in Lincoln County, Missouri in 1814. The 1821 Tax List for Lincoln County has him and his brother, Matthias, in Union Township. He was a large land owner filing patents for over 400 acres in Lincoln County from 1833 to 1841."

JOHN's will, 24 Apr 1846, has second wife Elizabeth and his children in this order:

JOHN was born at Anderson, South Carolina, USA, on 17 January 1793.^{11,12,13,14,15} He was the son of JOHN GILILLAND and CHARITY RICHARDSON. The back of Maurine Webb's 1978 William Lowe - Margaret Fair (Farr) Family Group Record has a pedigree tree for Agnes Johnson Lowe. Her parents are listed as William Lowe and Margaret FAIR-FARR ("They had 11 children"). His parents are John Lowe ("b. 1734 m. 1755 Maryland or S.C. d. 1820 in Washington Co. GA.") and Nancy Ann Butler ("b. 1738 Halifax Co. N.C."). Her father is James Butler. His father is William Butler "from England". Margaret FAIR-FARR's father is listed as FAIR (only).

p3 of Webb's Gililland Research notes:

"John m. Agnes Johnson Lowe. The Lowe family received land in Surry Co., NC then moved to the Pendleton Dist. of S.C. then to Warren Co, KY (Warren became Simpson Co. in 1819). As of 21 October 1833,her married name was Ligon.^9,10,11,5,12 She married William S Ligon at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 21 October 1833. Given as 1/16/1899 by Charity LIGON GenForum posting, but this is her death date..^{9,10,11,5,12,13} Charity died on 16 January 1899 at Winfield, Lincoln, Missouri, USA, at age 85.⁷

From her father's will:

"I give and bequeath to Margaret Moore my daughter the sum of one dollar to be paid to her at my death besides what I have heretofore given to her." Margaret was born at Simpson, Kentucky, USA, on 12 July 1815.^4,3,5 She was the daughter of JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND and AGNES JOHNSON (JOHNSTON) LOWE. As of 1 September 1833,her married name was Moore.^6,7,8,3,9 She married William Moore at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 1 September 1833.^6,7,8,3,9,10

     William Lowe (Lafayette) Gililland A Raley Story gives his middle name as Lafayette, but surely this is not right since WILLIAM LOWE is his grandfather's name. Pvt WILLIAM LOWE was a Revolutionary War soldier.

His father's will, 24 Apr 1846:

"I have heard my son William L. Gililland is dead but in case that he is not, I give and bequeath to him the sum of one dollar to be paid to him at my death".

Something curious here. According to US land patent records, William L owned 40 acres at Section 26, Township 50N 2W, NW quarter of NE quarter. But JOHN GILILLAND in his will of 1846 claims to own this 40 acres, and passes it on to William's brother John B Gililland. William was born at Logan, Kentucky, USA, on 4 November 1817.^3,2 He was the son of JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND and AGNES JOHNSON (JOHNSTON) LOWE. He married Ann (?). William died on 2 February 1850 at age 32.³

     John Richard Gililland Is probably a twin with Polly. See Mathias for evidence that he, Mathias, is John R's father rather than John. Note that John R is not mentioned in JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND's will. Also, it would be surprising to have 2 sons named John and we know that John Barnabus (named in the will) was a son.

John Wesley b. 11 Apr 1843, Troy, MO; Charity Emeline b. 1845, m. Brewster, had a ranch near Madill, OK; Mary Catherine b. 1846 m. Ben Bernard, farmer Gainsville, TX; James A b. 1847, moved to McCloud, OK; John H. b. 1849 went to CO; Payne b. 1851; last son, Jack b. 1853, Hereford, TX.

In 1858, John R. bought a farm in SW corner of Grayson City, TX near Tioga. Sold his slaves and invested in land & stock. Mary Catherine died 1896. John died in an accident in 1865."

The Loving Irish evidence, p 142, citing the 1850 Lincoln Co, MO Census, lists:

"John R., age 29, farmer, b. Mo; wife, Mary, age 29, b. Va; Mathias W., male, age 8, b. Mo., as were the rest of the family. Charity E., age 5; Mary C., 4; James A., 2; and John H., 11 months. Taken Sept. 24."

This almost matches the first list above. The one big difference is the son named Mathias W, b abt 1842 in the second list v John Wesley b. 11 Apr 1843, Troy, MO. This mirrors the uncertainly we have in whether Mathias or John (3) is the father of John Richard! Especially if the W in Mathias W stands for Wesley. The other, minor discrepancy is wife Mary's birthday of abt 1821 rather than 1817 reported in the first list.

Lincoln Co Marriages, p 23:

"John R. Gililland to Mary Ives 3 July 1842"

I wouldn't be surprised if his middle name were Richardson rather than Richard. John was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, in 1820.^6,7,8 He was the son of Mathias R Gililland. He married Mary Catherine Ives at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 3 July 1842.^9,10,11,12,8 John Richard Gililland appeared on the census of 1860 at Sherman, Grayson, Texas, USA.¹³ John died in 1865.^6,14

     Polly Gililland Is probably a twin with John Richard. See Mathias for evidence that he, Mathias, is her father rather than JOHN.

Lincoln Co Marriages, p 19:

"Richard Ives to Polly Gilliland 19 Feb. 1840." Polly was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, in 1820.² She was the daughter of Mathias R Gililland. As of 19 February 1840,her married name was Ives.^3,4,5 She married Richard Ives at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 19 February 1840.^3,4,5

     Allen Johnson (Johnston) Gililland Johnson or Johnston is his mother's middle name, and hence, probably, a family surname, but I don't know what the connection is, if any.

"He [John Sanford Gililland] was the son of an A. J. Gililland (or Gilliland) b. Kentucky, 1818, d. Pegosa Springs, Colorado, 1887, m. Nancy Stephens, b. Virginia, 1816, d. McKinney, Tex., 1860. After Nancy Stephens Gililland d., A. J. Gililland moved to Colorado and remarried. Their son (by Nancy Stephens) was supposedly raised by a cousin, Wesley Gilliland of Ft. Worth, Texas." [This almost matches the other evidence except for the b KY 1818 birth info.]

He married Nancy Stevens at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 12 September 1841.^7,8,9 He married Martha Hunter at Colorado, USA, after 1860. Note that one piece of evidence cites 3 children, the other mentions one son. One cites CO as marriage place, but the other takes its source as an AR census (but mentions that all 3 children were born in CO). I can't make sense of this..^10,11,12 Allen died in 1887 at Pagosa Springs, Archuleta, Colorado, USA.^6,13 His body was interred at Pagosa Springs, Archuleta, Colorado, USA.⁶

     Rev John Barnabus Gililland Note that his great grandfather was named BARNABUS or JOHANES FAIR or FARR or FEHR - cf John Barnabus.

From his father's will:

"I give and bequeath to my son John B. Gililland the Eighty acres of land which I own in section twenty six in township 50 range two west consisting of the N.E. 1/4 of the N E quarter and the NW 1/4 of the same quarter and also a horse, bridel and saddle and a cow and calf"

Curiously, the NW quarter of the NE quarter of this section belongs, according to US land patent records, to JOHN's son William L Gililland, not to him. But the will shows that JOHN believes this son to be dead possibly.

Gililland Research, p5: "John G. G. b. 1825 MO, m. Elizabeth R. of VA, dau: Eliz. - son of ours [ie, our John Gililland]"

The Loving Irish, p 142, quoting 1850 Lincoln Co, MO Census:

"John P., age 25, farmer and wife, Elizabeth R., also 25, b. Virginia. He was b. Mo. Their daughter was Elizabeth A., 2 years, b. Mo. Taken Sept. 21."

This is just a misreading of the 1850 MO census, Lincoln Co, District 49, roll 404, p 430, dwelling 529, family 529:

David H. Jennings is probably the brother of Elizabeth Rae (Jennings) Gililland. John was born at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 19 March 1825. Gililland Census Records gives John B b 10 Mar 1825.^4,5,6,7,2 He was the son of JOHN RICHARDSON GILILLAND and AGNES JOHNSON (JOHNSTON) LOWE. He married Elizabeth Rae Jennings on 10 March 1847.^8,5,9 John was listed as the head of a family on the in 1850 Census at Lincoln, Missouri, USA.³ John was listed as the head of a family on the in 1870 Census at Henderson, Texas, USA.¹⁰ John was listed as the head of a family on the in 1880 Census at Wood, Texas, USA.¹⁰ John died at Mineola, Wood, Texas, USA. The Melanie Snyder Gililland Tree lists this as ca 1870, place unknown..^11,10,12 His body was interred on 21 April 1896 at Mineola, Wood, Texas, USA.¹⁰

     William was born at Tennessee, USA, on 11 May 1812.^1,2 He was the son of Henry Ligon and Elizabeth Womack. He married Charity Gililland at Lincoln, Missouri, USA, on 21 October 1833.
