Mary Whitaker|d. Feb 1861|p105.htm#i5231|(?) WHITAKER||p102.htm#i5055||||||||||||||||
     Mary was born. She In all of the evidence letters she is referred to only as "Aunt Mary". This assignment of surname is suspect. There is a chance, that she is a Hargreaves - ie sister of father Richard Hargreaves rather than of mother Bridget Whitaker. There is even the possibility that she is a sister of Susannah Blomley's mother, although this seems to stretch the definition of aunt.

My assignment of Mary to the Whitakers is based on the flimsy evidence that she is referred to by the letter writer James just after he refers to Uncle James, who is definitely a Whitaker. The letter writer tends, I believe, to list kin in successive sentences.

The letter of 24 Jun 1852 says, "Aunt Mary is very cant at her age and was glad to hear from you. I only saw William her Son as the others were ....... home at the time I called." So Mary has at least a son William.

The letter of 24 Jun 1854 says, "Aunt Mary is Mary is very gaunt & Cousins on her side are all well. Mary is almost worried with children. I have to tell you that Cousin Bridget ..." Then he mentions in succession Eunice and "Cousin Jimmy". This is evidence, possibly, that Aunt Mary is a Whitaker, because Bridget, Eunice, and Cousin Jimmy are (children of Uncle James Whitaker). Mary (see below) is another of Aunt Mary's children.

The letter of 8 Jul 1855 says, "My Aunt Mary is yet living and is as well as one could expect. Elly, William, Mary & Jimmy & Anthony are near her at Lowerhouse they are all married I believe and steady." Again, using the author's tendency to list kin in adjacent lines, I take this as evidence, coupled with the references to William and Mary above, that these are Aunt Mary's children. She was the daughter of (?) WHITAKER. Mary died in February 1861 at Lancashire, England.3

     Ann was born. Ann died. She was the daughter of (?) WHITAKER. Ann Whitaker In all of the evidence letters she is referred to only as "Aunt Ann". This assignment of surname is suspect (cf. text for Aunt Mary, also assigned to the Whitakers). There is a chance, that she is a Hargreaves - ie sister of father Richard Hargreaves rather than of mother Bridget Whitaker. There is even the possibility that she is a sister of Susannah Blomley's mother, although this seems to stretch the definition of aunt.

My assignment of Ann to the Whitakers is based on the flimsy evidence that she is referred to by the letter writer James just after he refers to Uncle James, who is definitely a Whitaker. The letter writer tends, I believe, to list kin in successive sentences.

The letter of 24 Feb 1845 says, "My cousins wish to be remembered in my letters to you & my Uncle James at Greem in particular. I have sent them a copy of the letter I received last December and they always wish to know something about you. My Aunts and Cousins are well and wish to be remembered in my letter but particularly Cousins of my Aunt Ann's family. They are always very particular in their inquires about you. I have wrote to Bury to inform them of what has happened in our Family." So this is the only evidence I have that Aunt Ann and Uncle James might share surnames: the fact that they are in succeeding sentences. The reference to Bury is contrary evidence, however, because it is the Blomleys who apparently live in Bury.

     Daniel Clark Curiously, on p 67 of First Settlers:

"Aaron Camp married, 1st, _____, 2d, Hannah Clark, daughter of Daniel." But Hannah is not mentioned on p 75 under Daniel.

From WFT evidence:

Lived in Somerset Co. near N. Plainfield. Married twice, 2nd wife Miss Shopman. 3 children by first wife, 5 by Shopman.

Using information from First Settlers I have deduced several things from this complicated argument:

1. James Doty b 16 Jan 1756
2. So father John Doty m2 Sarah Clark > 16 Jan 1756
3. Their 1st child Daniel Doty b 23 Mar 1765
4. So John Doty m2 Sarah Clark < 23 Jun 1764
5. So they married sometime in range 16 Jan 1756 - 23 Jun 1764
6. I will use 1764 under the assumption that they had children immediately upon marriage

7. Assume Sarah Clark was at least 16 years old at marriage to Doty
8. So Sarah Clark b <= 1749 from Daniel Clark's 1st wife

9. Then Daniel Clark's 1st wife died and he m2 Abigail Shipman
10. So Daniel m2 Abigail >= 1749

11. Then Daniel and Abigail had 5 children, all of whom married. The marriage dates are 1771-1776 for 4 of them.
12. Assume they all married at >= 16 yrs of age. Then the earliest birth had to be <= 1756.
13. So Daniel m2 Abigail in the 1749-1756 range.

14. Daniel then died and William Parrott m Abigail.
15. William and Abigail had their 1st child William Jr 21 Sep 1760
16. Again assume that the children came immediately upon marriage.
17. So William m Abigail 1759-1760.

18. So Daniel died before 1759-1760.

In fact, his will (evidence obtained after argument above) was proved 21 Apr 1756.

"Daniel CLARK, of the Burrough of Elizabeth, Somerset County mentioned in his will his wife, Abigail, children John, Daniel, Stephanus, Jabesh, Sarah, Deborah, Keturah, all under age, and an expected child, his father (decd?) John CLARK, brother Jotham CLARK, the executors being Jotham CLARK, wife Abigail, and William PARROT, and the witnesses Nathaniel ROGERS, Sarah BEBOUT, and Timothy ALLEN. It was proved April 21, 1756. (N. J. Wills Lib F, p. 443.)"

[NB, I have not seen the actual will, only the description of it above.].
Daniel was born at Elizabeth, Union, New Jersey, USA, circa 1710.3,4 He was the son of John Clark. He married an unknown person .5,6 He married ABIGAIL [= Widow Clark] SHIPMAN before 1740.5,6 Daniel Clark left a will before 12 April 1756; undated, WILLIAM PARROTT is an executor, with Daniel's wife ABIGAIL, soon to be WILLIAM's wife.7 Daniel died before 12 April 1756.3,6,2,4 Daniel's will was probated at Elizabethtown, Essex, New Jersey, USA, on 21 April 1756.2,8
