EDITH HORTENSE SANDERS's Tree
Elizabethtown NJ and Derby CT from the 1600s

Alternative view, showing relationship with my Father's tree.
Abraham Clark ("The Signer") signed the Declaration of Independence and missed signing the Constitution because he was ill that day.
Gen Matthias Ogden was a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War and a friend of Lafayette.
Gov Aaron Ogden was a Colonel in that war and a Governor of NJ in 1812. He unsuccessfully attempted to capture Benedict Arnold when the latter's treachery was discovered in the war.
JOHN OGDEN ("The Pilgrim") founded Elizabethtown NJ, one of the four original Patentees, and one of the original 80 Associates in 1665, the decision-making body of the town. Jonathan Ogden, Matthias Hatfield, and ISAAC WHITEHEAD were also in this group of 80, as were two other sons of JOHN, John Jr and David (not shown). Richard Clarke was admitted into the Associates in 1695, the second group so admitted.
ISAAC WHITEHEAD was one of the original 80 Associates of Elizabethtown, NJ. His name appears as scribe on many early documents of the town. He was before that one of the earliest people in New Haven, CT founded in 1638; he is known to have lived there in 1643. A daughter, Susannah (not shown), sister of our SARAH, married Nathaniel Bonnell, yet another of the original 80 Associates of Elizabethtown and also early of New Haven. Susannah and Nathaniel's house, built before 1682, is still standing in Elizabeth, NJ, the oldest extant home there and across the street from the home of John Ogden Jr (not shown) built sometime prior to 1722 - also still standing.
Dr JOHN (JEAN) DURAND was a Huguenot run out of La Rochelle, France, by the 1685 revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV, thus revoking the protection of Protestants and essentially banning them. (Nathaniel Bonnell was also a Huguenot.)
Pvt EBENEZER DURAND, Dr JOHN's grandson, was a Private in the Connecticut Line in the Revolutionary War. Two of his cousins (not shown) were also Revolutionary War soldiers: Isaac and Eleazar Durand, brothers of Noah, sons of Joseph, grandsons of Dr JOHN.
Dr William Frederick Durand is discussed in the genealogy introduction. He is a father of aeronautical engineering. He invented the variable-pitch propeller. There is a laboratory at Stanford University named for him.
Asher Brown Durand is the famous landscape artist, mentioned in the genealogy introduction. There are many websites about him: http://www.whitemountainart.com/Biographies/bio_abd.htm a bio; http://www.tfaoi.com/advertis/das/1a9.htm several of his paintings; http://digimuse.usc.edu/landscapes/Durand.htm bio and painting; and http://www.byu.edu/moa/exhibits/Current%20Exhibits/150years/840006700.html his philosophy.
Hon George Harvey Durand was Mayor of Flint MI, US Congressman from MI, and Supreme Court Justice of MI.
Thomas Alva Edison is discussed in the genealogy introduction. He is, of course, the great inventor.
Elder ABRAHAM RUTAN was an Ensign in the Morris Co NJ Militia in the Revolutionary War and an Elder in the New Providence Presbyterian Church. Two of his sons were in the Revolutionary War, Lt Peter Rutan and Pvt Samuel Rutan.
Pvt William Parrott Jr, brother of our THOMAS PARROTT, was a Private in the Connecticut Line during the Revolutionary War. THOMAS PARROTT married Abigail Meeker, the daughter of Pvt Isaiah Meeker, Essex Co Militia, Revolutionary War. His second wife was our ROSANNAH RUTAN, daughter of Elder ABRAHAM.
Gov Robert Treat, Governor of CT, was a famous Indian fighter.
Rev Samuel Andrew was one of the three principal founders of Yale University and its second president.
All of the persons in the chart above are related - remotely in some cases - to our family via direct genetic link (in upper case), marriage, second marriage, or various degrees of cousinhood. For example, our ABIGAIL SHIPMAN married Daniel Clark before she married WILLIAM PARROTT, and Daniel is second cousin of Abraham Clark (The Signer). But Abraham married Sarah Hatfield, cousin of Phebe Hatfield, married to Robert Ogden 2d, great grandson of our JOHN OGDEN, or equivalently, second cousin to NATHANIEL OGDEN. MARY HORTENSE DURAND is fourth cousin to Prof William Frederick Durand.
There is a great Yiddish word for this extended family, mishpuchah. It translates, roughly, as the whole kit-and-kaboodle. The diagram above is a picture of my Mother's mishpuchah. See also my Father's mishpuchah.
